# fav_29 - Brick arch, Pompeii Wandering around Pompeii was a fascinating experience, viewing a town that was a thriving resort and sea port until buried under 30 feet of volcanic ash in A.D. 79 where it remained undisturbed for nearly two thousand years. The Romans were fine builders and used brick extensively, but holes in this arch indicate that this structure probably had a facing of marble. Through the archway, Mt. Vesuvius can be seen, still active. |
