  About the photographer...

David Vandré grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where he enjoyed a 33-year career in the S.F. Financial District, pursuing his zest for photography in his spare time. Retiring in 2003, he moved with his wife, Dell, to Hendersonville in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. His work is found in a number of private collections in the U.S. and Europe.

In his words…

I love to explore the world through my lens and especially enjoy the challenge involved in composition. I instinctively look for structural elements that draw my eye into the picture. I particularly like natural settings that contain a human element, but not necessarily people.

For example, in this photograph (Point Reyes, California) my eye is drawn to the limitless horizon, but there is foreground to indicate that I’m literally grounded, and the fence shows the hand of humans without being intrusive.

In this picture of the Big Sur coastline, a highway bridge in the distance indicates human presence, but also conveys how small we are in relation to the landscape.

In some photographs, however, human presence provides a necessary sense of scale such as these tiny figures of mother and child dwarfed by the massive cliff stretching overhead (Tennessee Valley Beach, north of San Francisco).

I photograph outdoors almost exclusively and prefer natural light. I went entirely digital a few years ago and feel that it has revitalized my photography. I am especially pleased that digital photography, along with major improvements in computer technology and the availability of excellent photo printers, has put the entire photographic cycle, from capturing images to printing and framing them, entirely in my hands. Overall, I enjoy creating fine art images that invite the eye of the onlooker to share my personal vision.
